Lion head coach, all-regional tournament players to represent Baldwin County in battle against North All-Stars

Posted

After she helped lead the Foley girls’ basketball team to its first state semifinal appearance, Lion head coach Emily Flanigan was named the head coach of the South All-Star team for the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s All-Star Week this summer.

In addition, Baldwin County will be represented by Ashauntee Hobbs from Foley, La’Merrica Johnson from Daphne and Spence Sims from Fairhope who were recognized with roster spots on the South All-Stars. All three players were also named to all-regional tournament teams this postseason.

The Pirates’ single-game scoring record-holder Sims (6’ 1” guard), who collected his 1,000th career point in his all-state junior season, will now team up with Baker’s Labaron Philon (6’ 4” guard) in the backcourt of the boys’ South All-Star squad. It was in Sims’ effort against Philon, the eventual Mr. Basketball and an Auburn commit, and the Hornets on Dec. 13, 2022, that produced the record-breaking 46 points.

Flanigan will be joined by a pair of local student-athletes where one of the familiar faces will come from her own roster in Hobbs (5’ 5” guard). Daphne’s Johnson (5’ 10” forward/guard), who earned all-state honors, will add to the girls’ star-studded lineup.

Hobbs and Johnson are just a pair who earned plenty of postseason experience this winter. Loachapoka went to the Class 1A semifinals thanks in part to Jasmyn Thomas (5’ 4” guard) and Lannett did the same in Class 2A behind Laila Lancaster (5’ 9” forward).

Similarly, on the boys’ circuit, Brandon Thomas (6’ 6” forward) and Cam Dooley (6’ 4” guard) helped the Valley Rams not only win the Class 5A state title but did so undefeated at 33-0.

From nearby Mobile County, Theodore’s Jazmyn Bigham (5’ 11” center) as well as Davidson’s Jenice Adjessom (5’ 4” point guard) and Morgan Barnett (5’ 6” guard) were also named to the girls’ all-star roster.

Joining Philon in representing Mobile County on the boys’ all-star roster will be Theodore’s Cameron Pruitt (6’ 3” guard/forward), Cottage Hill Christian’s Shadrick Toodle, Jr. (6’ 5” guard) and LeFlore’s Brittney Reed (6’ 7” center/forward).

The South All-Stars will be looking to avenge losses in last year’s contests where the North girls’ team extended to a 22-3 overall lead in the series with a 75-52 win to complement the North boys’ 101-91 win to improve to 50-29 overall against the South All-Stars.

The rosters and coaching staffs were announced Wednesday, April 12, by Brandon Dean, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA). The AHSADCA, which operates under the auspices of the AHSAA will also host all-star games baseball, softball, volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, cross country, tennis and golf during the All-Star Week, July 17-22.

Volleyball and cross country teams have already been released and include a coach and four volleyball players from Baldwin County as well as three local cross country runners.
