Fairhope residents and visitors will soon see pedestrian signals at the intersection of Fairhope Avenue and Section Street.

The iconic Fairhope Clock corner is set to get improvements, and those include pedestrian signals, brick pavers, landscaping and seating areas.

Director of Public Works Richard Johnson said during a Fairhope City Council work session July 10 that the intersection is the oldest signalized intersection in the city. The current controller, which tells the signal when to turn, runs pedestrian signals but not to their maximum capacity or efficiency. He also noted parts are no longer available for the current controller, making repairs difficult.

Council passed a resolution to award the bid to Bagby and Russell Electric Company for up to $116,789.00.

"It will allow the new pedestrian signals to work at their maximum capacity and allow connectivity to future upgraded signals in the downtown area," he said.

Johnson said the project will start Aug. 1 and should be completed no later than Nov. 1.

Overall improvements to the clock corner are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
