Event in Lillian to benefit domestic violence victims

Posted

A local resident, committed to highlighting domestic violence signs, initiated a community event to raise awareness and funds for its victims.

Cheryl Good described herself as a person working quietly behind the scenes of various events. However, upon educating herself about the indicators of domestic violence, she made it a goal to bring attention to this issue.

"What surprised me is that people don't know about it," Good said. "They don't know what's out there, they don't know the services and people believe it doesn't happen in their neighborhood."

Good emphasized the importance of recognizing the signs and staying vigilant, as these issues can affect close friends and family members.

In a previous Gulf Coast Media article, Executive Director of The Lighthouse, a local non-profit located in Robertsdale that serves victims of domestic violence, Rhyon Ervin said signs of domestic violence encompass not only physical abuse but also emotional, psychological, sexual, verbal and socio-economic dimensions.

"Some signs of domestic violence may include a lack of individuality, lack of a voice as well as fear that what is said will be found out," The Lighthouse executive director said.

On April 6 at the Lillian Community Club from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., individuals are encouraged to come out and support a cause that will benefit the victims of domestic violence.

This event will feature a silent auction, arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, live music and a raffle.

All proceeds will go toward The Lighthouse, a local non-profit located in Robertsdale, which serves victims of domestic violence and their children, as well as adult victims of sexual violence in Baldwin County.

Ervin said she is thankful for Good and her initiative to help those within the community.

"She (Good) made a decision to raise funds and increase awareness because unfortunately, there continues to be people in the community that don't know we (The Lighthouse Shelter) are here," Ervin said. "We were excited about her desire to do this and she has really positive energy, is very enthusiastic and we are very appreciative. It is not often that you find individuals in the community that take son this size of an event to benefit the agency."
