Fairhope’s Daniell Boston-bound after committing to Harvard football

Pirate tight end set to join Crimson, second-longest rivalry in college football history

When Sanders Daniell takes his football talents from Fairhope to Harvard, he’ll be joining the second-longest rivalry in college football when the Crimson take on Yale in The Game.

The Crimson from Harvard have played the Bulldogs from Yale each year since 1875 according to the NCAA record book. The Game is only preceded by the Yale-Princeton rivalry that started two years prior.

After he received an offer from the program in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, he announced his commitment to Harvard just two days later on Thursday following the Pirates’ action in the Foley 7-on-7 Showdown. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound tight end also boasts a GPA of 4.0 and an ACT subscore of 35.

“Huge thank you to my family, friends, and coaches who spent so much time helping me reach my goals,” Daniell wrote on social media. “Thank you to all the coaches that spent time recruiting me, it was truly an amazing experience. Thank you God for giving me this opportunity. Go Crimson!”

Daniell had been in New England competing in camps and visited Harvard on Monday, June 26, the day before he announced his offer. He previously competed at Dartmouth in New Hampshire on June 24 and Brown in Rhode Island on June 25.

As a junior, Daniell helped Fairhope to a sixth consecutive playoff berth with 189 receiving yards on 14 catches where 2 went for touchdowns over 5 games. He was named an all-county honorable mention as one of 18 Pirates recognized by Baldwin County Public Schools.

In Fairhope’s spring game earlier this offseason, Daniell pulled down 5 catches for 82 yards and a touchdown in only one half against Pascagoula, Mississippi.

The Crimson finished 6-4 overall in 2022 and earned a 4-3 mark in Ivy League play but fell in a 19-14 battle against Yale in the regular-season finale. The Game sold out Harvard Stadium with 30,006 fans in attendance.
