The eligibility of multiple Gulf Shores student-athletes — including members of the top-ranked, undefeated football team — could be under closer scrutiny from the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

A report from WKRG News 5 indicated that the housing situation of several football players, as well as a softball player, who transferred to Gulf Shores High School raised flags. Not only was another name on the leasing information but payments also got behind far enough for the families to be evicted from their units.

Documents in the WKRG report Jason Barnett, the owner of Gulf Coast Athletics, as the rent-responsible party on units where Gulf Shores athletes, including multiple football players on this year’s team as well as two from last year’s team, resided. Gulf Coast Athletics is a training facility with adult, youth and private training sessions featured on their website that includes an Orange Beach address.

Matt Akin, superintendent of Gulf Shores City Schools, said in a Friday statement that GSCS has been cooperative with AHSAA officials.

“Gulf Shores City Schools has a detailed enrollment process to ensure compliance with AHSAA rules and regulations as it pertains to any transfer student athletes,” Akin wrote Friday. “Gulf Shores City Schools has and will continue to fully and completely comply with the AHSAA’s investigative efforts into this matter until it reaches its conclusion. Further, we maintain that Gulf Shores City Board of Education and its employees have complied with all AHSAA rules and regulations.”

The Dolphin football team, undefeated and ranked No. 1 for the first time in program history, is set to host the No. 10 Vigor Wolves this Friday in Class 5A Region 1 action. Vigor was under similar inspection earlier this season and was found to have broken transfer rules. The Wolves had their 31-9 victory over UMS-Wright vacated as punishment.

Other football teams from Coosa Christian and Pell City were also found to have violated the AHSAA transfer rule and have already forfeited wins from this season.

The WKRG report also said AHSAA representatives were set to be on the Gulf Shores campus on Monday, Oct. 30, to delve further into the recent transfers.

The Dolphin football team has one more game left on its regular-season schedule after this week, another home game against the B.C. Rain Raiders. In its first eight games, Gulf Shores has outscored opponents 301-70 to help remain undefeated. The Dolphins had never opened a season better than last year’s 3-0 start.
