Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Spanish Fort volleyball hosting area playoff tournaments

Bayshore Christian already advanced, Central Christian wins PCC’s West Region Championship

Posted

Playoff season has arrived on the volleyball courts for schools in the Alabama High School Athletic Association where four Baldwin County teams are hosting area tournaments to get the postseason started this week.

Class 4A Orange Beach and Class 6A Spanish Fort will have contests on Wednesday and Class 5A Gulf Shores will crown an area champion on Thursday. Class 2A Bayshore Christian defeated Chickasaw at home on Tuesday to advance and defend its South Regional Championship.

On the Class 7A stage, Daphne, Fairhope and Foley are all set to hit the road across the bay to square off against McGill-Toolen on Thursday.

Central Christian to PCC Final Four

In the Panhandle Christian Conference, the Central Christian Saints are heading to the conference semifinals after they claimed the West Region Championship last weekend. Sophomore Hayes Turner was named Tournament MVP to help the Saints get one step closer to their first PCC Championship since 2012.

Central Christian will open the Final Four tournament against the No. 2 seed from East Region, West Florida Baptist at Aletheia Christian Academy in Pensacola, Florida on Friday. The other semifinal matchup will feature the East Region champion East Hill against Lighthouse Baptist Academy with a champion scheduled to be crowned on Saturday, Oct. 21.

The Saint volleyball team has previously won the Panhandle Christian Conference in 2008, 2010 and most recently in 2012.

AHSAA Area Tournament Details

Class 2A Area 1

Bayshore Christian swept Chickasaw 3-0 to earn the top seed in the South Region Tournament starting on Oct. 25.

The Eagles reached the state semifinals in their first season competing on the Class 2A stage after two trips to the state championship match in their first two seasons on the Class 1A circuit.

Class 4A Area 1 at Orange Beach: Wednesday, Oct. 18

Satsuma at Orange Beach, 4:30 p.m.

St. Michael at UMS-Wright, 6 p.m.

Championship, 7:30 p.m.

Last year, Orange Beach beat Satsuma in the finals to advance to the regionals so there will be at least one new regional qualifier out of Area 1 this season. During the regular season, the Makos split their matches with the St. Michael Cardinals.

Class 5A Area 1 at Gulf Shores: Thursday, Oct. 19

B.C. Rain at Gulf Shores, 4 p.m.

Elberta at Williamson, 5 p.m.

Championship, 6 p.m.

Gulf Shores will be looking for its second straight area title since dropping to Class 5A and finished the regular season undefeated in area play. The Dolphins went to state as the regional runner-up and fell in their first semifinal appearance since 2011.

Class 6A Area 2 at Spanish Fort: Wednesday, Oct. 18

Baldwin County at Spanish Fort, 3 p.m.

Bayside Academy at Robertsdale, 4:30 p.m.

Championship, 6 p.m.

Spanish Fort swept the 21-time defending state champion Bayside Academy Admirals during the regular season to own the right to host the area tournament. The Toros have been the Class 6A Area 2 champions each year Gretchen Boykin has served as the head coach starting in 2014.

Class 7A Area 2 at McGill-Toolen: Thursday, Oct. 19

Foley at McGill-Toolen, 4 p.m.

Fairhope at Daphne, 5:30 p.m.

Championship, 7 p.m.

Last year’s area tournament had the same pairings where McGill-Toolen and Fairhope were the regional representatives. The Pirates did earn an extra win over the Daphne Trojans in non-region action during the regular season but each team scored a win in the region standings.

Even with a new head coach, Fairhope will look to retain the upper hand in the Eastern Shore rivalry while Daphne will look to its deep bench to help throw the kitchen sink at a long stay in the playoffs.
