Baldwin County schools sending 140 runners to cross country state meet

Of the 2,196 cross country runners qualified for the state championship races set for Saturday, 140 of them will come from schools in Baldwin County to make up around 6.3% of the field.

Six runners will do so as individual section champions and three teams will be fresh off a first-place finish in their sectional battles.

The Bayshore Christian Eagles will have the full allotment of 20 runners at the state championships, following by 18 Fairhope Pirates and 16 St. Michael Cardinals to lead the way.

Not far behind them will be the 15 Spanish Fort Toros and Bayside Academy Admirals, along with 13 Robertsdale Golden Bears, 12 Gulf Shores Dolphins, 9 Orange Beach Makos, 8 Elberta Warriors, 5 Daphne Trojans, 4 Baldwin County Tigers and 3 Foley Lions.

Just over half of the athletes will be making repeat trips to the final race of the year where 71 runners have competed in a state championship meet before. All three representatives from the Foley boys’ team and Daphne girls’ team, as well as all five competitors from the Spanish Fort girls’ team, were featured on the state championship stage last season.
