Orange Beach Police warns Invasion vehicles of public roadway laws

Posted

An invasion sounds like something that is forced, but Orange Beach police want this weekend’s invasion of The Wharf to be done legally.

Orange Beach Invasion, a three-day car show featuring hotrods, motorcycles, trucks and cars, is coming to The Wharf Friday, March 22, through Sunday, March 24. The event brings visitors to South Baldwin from all over the country, and while “we welcome this event and all of the attendees and participants,” wrote Orange Beach Police Department Lt. Trent Johnson in a news release, “we do want to recognize that many of the vehicles attending this event have been modified or contain aftermarket accessories that may not be legal for operation on public roadways.”

OBPD will be enforcing laws to “address those issues should these vehicles be operated on the public roadways.”

The specific laws the agency will be focusing on include:

  • Headlight height – no more than 54", no less than 24"
  • Tail lamp height – no more than 60", no less than 20"
  • Improper lights – red, amber, yellow or white only
  • Improper muffler – excessive noise or smoke
  • No or improper tag light – white only
  • Unapproved light devices – to include undercarriage lights
  • Improper horn – unreasonably or unnecessarily loud or harsh
  • Overwide truck – above 102"
  • Overheight truck – 13.5'
  • Racing on the highway
  • Reckless driving
  • Careless driving (municipal ordinance) –  includes persons in the bed of trucks
  • Motor vehicle speed contests, exhibition of speed, sideshows etc. prohibited (a new law)      subject to enforcement on public roadway and any other public or private parcel without the consent of the owner of the property, to include donuts, burnouts, motor vehicle stunts, speed contest, exhibition of speed or reckless driving – this is an arrestable offense, and if performed on a public roadway can result in the impound of the vehicle

The car and truck show will take over The Wharf from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. It is open to the public and free to attend.
